Le genre Talpinaria correspond au sous-genre Talpinaria du genre Pleurothallis décrit en 1986 par Luer (Icones Pleurothallidinarum III, Systematics of Pleurothallis)
Les espèces se carctérisent par une inflorescence uniflore, naissant au sommet du ramicaule d'une spathe bien visible et par leur feuille pétiolée.
Le genre contient 4 espèces, principalement andines.
